Association Level
This course is aimed at the duty referee. It is only recognised within the Illawarra Basketball Association.

To become an association referee you are required
- to attend a 2 hour discussion on the rules
- successfully complete a 25 True/False test
- successfully complete an on court assessment.
Basic requirements for an association referee include:
- a commitment to a referees roster
- referee with enthusiasm by keeping up with play
- use the basic signals to communicate with players and scoretable
- call enough fouls and violations to keep the game in control
Level 0 Course
This course is aimed at persons wishing to become a fully qualified referee.
To become a level 0 referee you are required
- to attend a theory course - 6 hours.
(usually 3 x 2 hour sessions)
- successfully complete a 50 Yes / No test
- successfully complete an on court assessment.
Basic requirements for a level 0 referee include:
- a commitment to a referees roster and referees' program
- referee with enthusiasm by keeping up with play
- use the signals to communicate with players and scoretable
- call enough fouls and violations to keep the game in control
Senior referees qualify as a preliminary level referee.
Junior referees qualify as a youth graded referee (Y1).
Junior referees can then progress to Y2 and Y3 based on referee
performance and game standard.
Level 1 Course
This course is available to competent level 0 and Y3 referees and is the next step in the progression of a referee.
To become a level 1 referee you are required
- to attend a theory course (2-3 hours)
- successfully complete a 50 True/False test
- successfully complete an on court assessment.
Junior referees qualify for Y4 grade and may progress to Y5.
Junior referees automatically qualify for the equivalent senior grade when reaching 18.
Level 2 and Level 3 Courses
These courses are offered by N.S.W. Basketball Referees Committee and are by invitation only. Referees invited to these course have been identified by N.S.W. Basketball Referees Committee through the referees commitment to state refereeing programs.
